Day Five & Six (Part One of Four)

Peter Shea's Got Something to Say.

DENVER YEAH!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

We are halfway or almost about half way. Either way, Denver is awesome and beautiful. It's outdoorsy and dog friendly. It seems to have the best city and backwoods balance. If you want to go on a hike in the morning with your German Shepard and then, at night, stumbled down a street with a bunch of people wearing the same tshirt on a pub crawl, go to Denver.

Okay, from here on in Denver will told to you through the brain of a man that needs no introduction, Peter Shea. Just like when Sierra wrote her blog, I told him that he could write whatever he wanted to as long as he told you guys about our hosts in Denver, Rina and Jason.
Here, is part one.
Okay, go Peter, go Peter, go:
"Hello there. I’m Peter, and I’m on a road trip with Ross. He’s probably told you that already. Ross has been doing most of the management of this blog on this trip. “Most”? Okay… all. In exchange for Ross’s commitment to the blog, I’ve been doing all of the driving. “All”? Okay… most. I drove for the first two and a half days – from Jersey to Nebraska – but since then, Ross and I have been splitting the driving duties 50/50. Probably should have been doing that the whole time. Unfortunately, I had something to prove to myself or Ross or Tyler the Carnie or Frank the dog or Lord only knows who. My breaking point arrived about two hundred miles into Nebraska. I just needed a break from staring straight into the vast, unchanging Nebraska horizon. I pulled into a gas station and asked Ross if he could take over. He said “Of course, you giant putz” and took the keys. Since then, it’s been smooth sailing or, more accurately, smooth driving. In fact, it’s probably been smoother sailing/driving. Ross seems a little more relaxed behind the wheel and our abuse of highway rumble strips appears to have lessened.

Another benefit of having Ross drive more is that it allows me to spend some time blogging for all of you good people. I’m a blog veteran myself. In fact, the word on the playground is that this blog was partially inspired by a blog I created earlier in the year called “AustrAlien in Australia. That little piece of internet real estate detailed my eight week trek around Australia and New Zealand. It was a joy to write, and I’m appreciative that I took the time to capture some already fading memories of my time in Oz and Kiwi country. If you’d like to read that blog, please check out AustrAlienInAustralia.com. If you don’t want to read the blog, please check out TheOnion.com or IndieWire.com or ProFootballFocus.com. All those sites are great and not one mention of me or my adventures Down Under in any of the three. So there you go. Choices.

When this blog last left off, Ross mentioned that we had just dropped off our ride share / future carnie, Tyler, in the capital of cowboy country: Cheyenne, Wyoming. After a goodbye pitcher at the Drunken Skunk bar in downtown Cheyenne, Tyler grabbed his pack and took off down the lonesome highway. Ross and I stopped and grabbed a $5 pizza and a $3 sandwich at a small strip mall. We were overjoyed to discover that the strip mall also housed a small bingo lounge that goes by the name “Grandma’s Pickle Palace”. I can only speculate as to the origin of that moniker, but it might be better to just not know the real story. There are so many possibilities. Makes ya wonder.

We were both feeling pretty drowsy from our long drive and our $5 pizza, but we drove another two hours and made it to Rina and Jason’s house in Denver. I first met Rina when we were both teenage knuckleheads enrolled in the ninth grade at Scotch Plains – Fanwood High School located in the heart of the central New Jersey suburban wonderland. We’ve stayed in touch since then thanks to facebook and the simple joy of talking about kids we went to school with behind their backs. Rina married Denver-native Jason about five or so years ago and moved to Colorado back in 2012. One big reason for the road trip was to visit those two and get to see the life they live in Denver. And it’s a pretty nice life, too."
